The wilds: beasts, raids and outlaws
Deer, hares and boars roam the countryside, and wolves come out at night. Stray dog packs haunt the roads, bulls charge, and in the autumn rut the stags fight back. Now and then a tougher beast appears, such as an alpha wolf, an old tusker or a mad bull, more often after dark. Worst of all are the legendary beasts like the Grey Ghost or Old Ironhide, with a Crown bounty and a trophy for whoever kills one. /beasts lists them, and a crier sells their tracks. Bandits keep camps and sometimes ambush travellers. Now and then the bells ring: Cuman raiders are coming at a town. Everyone who helps beat them off shares the Crown's reward, and if they win, they carry off part of the town's treasury. Named outlaws hide in the wilds with a price on their heads: /outlaws lists them, and a town crier sells a rumour of where they hide.
