How bounties work

The register, the bounties, the towns' fines - and what settles a notice. The register itself.

How bounties work

The register. A crime others notice - a blow struck in anger, a purse cut, a door forced, a life taken - goes on the register as a notice: the crime, the town it happened in, its bounty and its fine. There is one register for the whole realm, grouped by person. In the game the law's men read it with /wanted; anyone else sees their own notices there.

Bounties. Every crime has its bounty, and a person's bounties add up. The law's men see the sum over the criminal's head. Whoever arrests them takes half of it from the Crown's treasury.

Fines. Each town's officials - its Bailiff, Reeve and Castellan, or its Lord - price up to twenty offences of their own (/fines). A notice's fine is the price of the town it happened in; out in the wilds, or for an offence the town has not priced, the realm's. A fine's coin goes to that town's treasury while a faction holds it, else to the Crown.

Settling. Any lawful punishment settles the notices it covers:

A notice nobody acts on is forgotten after a week. Confession at the church forgives the petty ones.

Being taken. Down, or yielding (/surrender), the law may arrest you, fine you, put you in the stocks or lead you to the cell by the rope. In the game, the use key on a person opens what you may do with them.
